And when you’ve settled in, enjoy the myriad of pursuits that await you here. Profuse flora from buttercups to orchids. Soaring eagles, osprey, redtail hawks and a host of smaller field and water birds.
Catch and release stream and pond trout fishing – with fly fishing lessons if you wish. Nature photography at it’s best. Hike into your National Forest and Weminuche Wilderness – the largest wilderness in Colorado. See waterfalls , majestic canyons , old growth evergreen forests shimmering aspen groves , cascading creeks , meandering streams and vistas of the Continental Divide . Enjoy an awe inspiring drive or a rhythmic, scenic horseback ride.

Further afield, relive history on the Silverton Narrow Gauge Train through stupendous mountains to an authentic 1800s mining town. Sense the cliff dwelling spirits of ancient Anasazi Native Americans at Mesa Verde National Park or dig your toes into the amazing thousand foot high dunes at Great Sand Dunes National Park . Experience the excitement of whitewater rafting , the slapstick comedy of a melodrama theater or a relaxing soak in Pagosa’s hot mineral water pools . And more. Then renew again and again with the friendly service and your comfortable, restful cabin at the VA Poma Ranch.

During late September and early October, the aspen trees put on their robes of fall splendor. Entire mountainsides take on a mixture of yellows, oranges and reds or those colors peek from dense evergreen foliage as small patches or isolated trees while Gambles oak spreads a carpet of rust-red at lower elevations. The youngsters have returned to school and an added level of peace and relaxation is mantled with fall’s magnificence.

As summer passes on, interests shift to hunting . Archery in late August and September. Muzzle loading and Grouse in September. Turkey in September and October. Deer and Elk in October and November. Hunting is allowed in designated locations on the Ranch and access to the National Forest is readily available right out the back gates.
