At The Ranch

The Weminuche River
The V.A. Poma Ranch has three miles of the very productive Weminuche River winding through the property.

Weminuche River

It is a fly-fisherman's paradise with deep holes around every bend, large rocks creating breaks for fish to hide, and very few trees to snag those less-than-expert casts.

Clear Water of the Weminuche

We stock our section of the Weminuche every year with Rainbow Trout and/or other trout species ranging from 10 to 18 inches.

Rainbow Trout

Rainbows are the most common trout caught here on the Ranch, however, you'll find some native Cutthroat, Browns and Brookies also.
There is nothing like having a trout on the end of a fly-line in such a beautiful location.

But, even if fly-fishing is not your thing, trout can be taken on spinning tackle as well.

Lakes and Ponds

In addition to the Weminuche, there are two stocked ponds and the beautiful fifteen acre Martin Lake on the Ranch.

The other two stocked ponds on the Ranch are the Quarry Pond and the Windmill Pond.

The most popular fishing for families is at the heavily stocked Windmill Pond.

Windmill Pond

It was Vic Poma's desire to always keep the Windmill Pond stocked for the enjoyment of kids and seniors. Kids of all ages can usually bring in a trout here if they have no luck elsewhere. And there are some big ones!

Nearby Fishing
In addition to the fantastic fishing on-site at the Ranch, a hike of about a mile and a half from Martin Lake takes you to another section of of the Weminuche on National Forest property.  This area is known as "The Rocks".

The Rocks on the Weminuche

From this section of the Weminuche, as it flows down the canyon to the Piedra River, you are more likely to take Brook Trout and Cutthroat Trout in addition to Rainbows and Browns.

And, if that is not enough, there is more great trout fishing on the nearby Piedra River and Williams Creek.  The whole area is fly-fishing heaven.

And no trip to the V.A. Poma Ranch is complete without a visit to the stunning Williams Creek Reservoir about five miles from the Ranch.
Williams Creek Reservoir

Though you may fish from the bank, your efforts will likely be better rewarded from a boat.  There is a boat ramp on the far end of the lake.  If you don't have your own boat, there are a couple of rental boats/canoes available at the Sportsman's Supply, a few miles from the Ranch.  Just let us know and we can make arrangements for you.

Since Williams Creek Reservoir is a no-wake lake, it is wonderful for canoes and small craft.  With the beautiful mountain backdrop, it is worth a visit even if you care nothing about fishing or boating.
