Hiking
The V.A. Poma Ranch offers three trails designated for hiking and birding, with the adjacent National Forest just steps away for you to explore. There is also a trail leading from the Ranch which follows the Weminuche River downstream, ending at the Piedra River.
Currently, there are three well mapped and signed scenic trails:
Lake Trail Map [1.2 miles]
Spring Trail Map [.6 miles]
Ponderosa Trail Map [2 miles]
The Ranch is located very close to a number of San Juan National Forest trailheads. The Cimarrona Creek Trail starts above the headwaters of the Williams Creek Reservoir and continues upward to the Continental Divide. The Piedra River Trail is a relatively flat easy trail that proceeds along rocky canyon walls near a lovely stream for 3.5 miles to a footbridge and beyond. The Ice Cave Ridge Trail is an easy short trail to Ice Cave Ridge where fissues shelter winter ice into early summer. The Williams Creek trail follows the creek headwaters north into a "walled garden like canyon". Ask our staff for more information.
See also our
BIRDING PAGE for more trail pictures and information.
Remember, you must be a guest or register at the Ranch House. Full size Hiking Maps are available there.
